Active X VB no longer works in Excel 2008 home & student?

Hi, I have created several .xlsm in the past, but they
no longer runs.

Symptoms: The previously inserted VB buttos don't react to clicks,
and If I insert another button I get the message: "Cannot insert
Object".

This is new; possibly following recent MS updating of Windows 7?

I have of course enabled macro processing, and used this feature
many times up to now. No settings have changed.

How can I get back the VB macro processing?
