Activation issue - tcpip to netbeui, reboot = reactivate - give me my money back

In the last few weeks, I migrated to a new asus/amd based system with XP
Pro..
Built XP, configured apps - all OK Until now:
I changed the protocol on a nic from TCPIP to Netbeui - had to restart for
it to take effect.
I rebooted and now get " due to significant hardware changes, need to
reactivate - click here".
There have been NO hardware changes since the install.
I did "click here" and got a message that " The number of times this product
key has been used has been exceeeded" . "Please enter a different product
key and click retry"
The product key that I have is the ONLY product key I have. The original
one. Once ? that's it right ?
So now I have to go to the store and BUY another frigging license ?
Is this typical ? CHANGING the protocol on a NIC forces a reinstall ?

I then clicked on "for additional info "...
https://pa.one.microsoft.com/portal.asp?req=55276014180987222868&err=45092
and get a failure - page not found.

Now I have to CALL someone to use this PC ????????
I'm trying to behave .. watch my language here, but this is incredible.
Give me my $199 back - I'm never using this again.

I've been an XP user for about 2 weeks - enough for me - now powering up my
W2k box that has worked fine for 5 years to get my job done.

You mean you actually want to *use* your computer instead of jumping
through MS' activation hoops? How dare you! :)

Again, activation and Windows Genuine Rip off only inconveniences paying
customers and doesn't stop piracy one iota.

I rebooted and this time got the same screen but this time I COULD get to
their web link:

https://pa.one.microsoft.com/portal.asp?req=55276014180987222868&err=45092

where I saw: "If you believe you received this message in error, return to
the activation wizard and click Telephone to speak to a Customer Service
Representative near you. "

Real helpful.

So now I'm supposed to call an 888 number ( and hold for ?? ) and read to
them a 54 digit code

That's right: FIFTY FOUR numbers in the installation ID code that I need to
relay to the CSR.

WHO's idea was THIS ?

For your info:

I called at 12:06 went through automated script prompting me to read all
54 digits.
I did so - it confirmed the numbers, told me to "hold on please" Then "
Sorry , I cannot help you please hold for a human" I did.
I waited about 2 minutes and at 12:12 was asked by her if I bought it at a
store or came with PC.
I told her that I bought it at a store and asked " is this typical?" She
said YES, I will have to do this each time I make any changes. I'm amazed !
How can anyone put up with this ? This HAS caught on, but I am astounded
that it did. Whenever I change the protocal on a nic I have to get their
friggin permission ?
So I read her the 54 digits and she confirmed my install and that my code
had been used before.
" No kidding ! It was - by me when I installed it about 2 weeks ago !!??!!
Isn't that why I'm calling this number ??? "

She read me off some new numbers to enter onto the "activation failure"
screen and OK now.

I'm just astounded that this is going to be "normal".
I'm glad this happened before I erased my Win2000 installation.
I was about to move the drive over to the new PC as a second HDD this week
and give away the old PC hardware. Not now.
Apparently this is now a 3ghz internet browser. I can't muck with this at
all ?? What a waste.

Or maybe I'll just toss the old PC and install W2k here instead.

As you wish. There is really nothing wrong with running
Windows 2000/SP4. While some MVP's in this group would be
writing that a significant majority of Windows users are
using Windows XP, I still question it. More than half of
the Windows system in our area are still running Windows
2000. The only Windows XP machines are new, off-the-shelf
Dell's and HP's.

Ironically Alias, those I know with so called "pirated" installs of
Microsoft Windows XP Version 2002 with SP 2+ haven't had any problems with
Product Acitvation nor WGA! You think it might be one of those Ying-Yang
mystical things causing this? Like the universe is a compromise of
contradictions philosophies? Maybe Microsoft acutally backs the looter.
Birds of a feather... As they say.
