a7v333-secondary ide controller broken?

bone

The following event occurred tonight on my a7v333. Exactly the same thing
has been happening for a few months now but tonight it resisted fixing
itself so I disconnected the drives in question.

Actually it occurred 25 times in 100th of a second.

I check my Windows explorer and yes the two hard disks aren't there.

I begin to think that something very bad is happening.

I reboot and they are there for a few moments.

So I took the CDROM off the primary controller and put the IC35L on as
slave and its working fine. I suspect if I put the other drive on the
second primary channel it would work ok.

I have to think its the secondary ide controller and not the hdd onboard
controllers.

I don't believe its a power problem or a heat issue.

Unless someone has some brilliant idea about a simple fix I think I have to
take it to the dealer and let them run some tests.

It's possible you have a controller or cable problem. However, the one drive
you have is an IBM Deskstar 60GXP, which are notoriously unreliable drives -
a problem with it would be my first suspect..

While I don't have that mother board, I had a similar problem with the
VIA 333 chipset. To make a long (2 day) story short, the primary IDE
channel didn't like two devices and it didn't like the 80 conductor
cable (tried several of them).

I ended up doing two things:
1. isolated the hard drive on the primary IDE channel and placed the
CDROM and CD-RW on the secondary IDE channel.
2. replaced the 80 conductor cable with an old 40 conductor.

After that things worked well.
