A7N8X-X installation problem

I recently bought and installed an Asus A7N8X-X after having numerous
problems with my machine that ultimately resulted in it not booting
anymore. I've installed a new motherboard once before, and I have done
other small jobs on this box, so I am not /totally/ ignorant. But I
was hoping to get some help with a problem I can't solve.

Here's what's happened. I uninstalled the old motherboard and
installed the new one. I was extra careful to hook everything up the
way the manual says to. Then when I went to turn it on, nothing
happened. I double checked my connections and double checked that
everything was hooked up right and tried it again. I also double
checked the jumpers. Again, nothing. What is interesting is that when
I turn it on the CPU fan will come on for just a second and then stop,
as if it had received just one, brief jolt of electricity. It doesn't
far enough along to boot or anything.

In hindsight, perhaps I should have bought a new power supply because
that's what I am thinking the problem is. Do you think it is a power
supply problem or is there anything else I can check before I shell out
more cash?

Here's my system:
AMD Duron 850 (yes, I know the manual says not to use CPUs with less
than 1 GHz, but I didn't learn that until after I bought the mobo.
Shame on me.)
512 MB DDR PC3200, brand new
2 IDE hard drives
1 IDE CD-RW, relatively new
350W Antec power supply, (1-2 years old)
Cards:
10/100 ethernet
D-Link DL-520 wireless card
old nVidia graphics card
old soundblaster card

I appreciate any help you can offer.

You should check the cpu jumper for the 100mhz fsb 100mhx2= 200mh fsb
durons and athlon (the non xp one) are 100/200mh fsb
As it adjust by a jumper on the mobo
it doesn't adjusted by the bios like the 133 166 and the 200mh fsb as
it is for the athlon xp series and semptron.

the reason why it doesn't boot up it because of the cop protection
that prevent you from burning the cpu. or Maybe there is no multiplier
to fit your cpu so it doesn't boot

Hope it help...

Make sure your cpu fan is connected to the "cpu fan" terminal on the
mobo--there are more than one fan terminals, but this combo must be
connected. s

I just checked the pinout of the Duron, and S7 and U7 pins do not
have thermal diode connections on them. Asus has overheat protection,
and it is based on the tiny W86L785TS-S.

http://www.winbond-usa.com/products/winbond_products/pdfs/PCIC/W86L785TS-S.pdf

If you look on page 9 figure 3, it shows the monitoring circuit.
When your Duron is installed, the CPUT1 pin will float high,
because the thermal diode is missing. It is possible the 8 pin
chip concludes there is an overheat and it has shut off the computer.
So the crux of your issue, as near as I can tell, is CPUT1 on the
W86L785TS-S.

If you look between the processor socket and the DIMMs, you
might see the Winbond chip there. The picture in the manual
isn't clear enough to decide which is which.

Thank you, Paul. The circuitry of the chip is about 1000 feet over my
head. I was wondering whether this situation is a deal breaker? I
mean, is there no way around this? Can the CPUT1 pin be "fooled" into
thinking there is no overheat situation? Or am I just screwed?

Thanks again

Progress. Power is absolutely getting to the mobo, thanks to the LED
on the board. The fans all kick on, and there is every indication that
the thing is "on" except that there is nothing going on in the monitor.
No BIOS screen. The usual "click" that the monitor is about to start
displaying the bootstrapping stuff never happens and the LEDs on the
front of the monitor just scroll back and forth as if the PC was off.

On the chassis, the power LED is on and the HDD LED does not light up.

What I did differently: I reset the CMOS and changed the FSB jumper to
200 MHz.

Now I need to get the MoBo talking to the graphics card I guess. Or
something. I double checked the HDD, floppy, and CDROM cables to
ensure they were firmly seated and correctly set. I'm kind of at a
loss.
