a french "e" instead of apostrophe; not doing shortcut; undo?

I am unintentionally somehow turning my apostrophe key into a french e, but I
am not (to my knowledge) doing the shortcut...how the heck do I undo this
inadvertent error?

Maybe you have a laptop that can be set for typing English or French.
If so, somewhere on it is a key for switching back and forth.

Maybe you've inadvertently switched to a different software keyboard.
Alt-Shift will toggle/cycle through all the ones that happen to be
installed.

If you want to disable keyboards you don't need, you do that in
Windows, through Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language
Settings, with the details differing between XP and Vista, but it
should be clear from the first panel where to go and what to do.
