16 bit subsystem/Ntvdm subsystem--HELP

I am having a lot of trouble accessing programs that two
weeks ago I was able to access! The error message says
16 bit Windows Subsystem
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications...
I have attempted to use Microsoft Knowledge Base article
#324767, which did not fix it...so I tried to enter the
stuff in Notepad that it suggested, BUT I could not find
the command.com file on the XP CD--HELP on this one...I
also found an article #314106, and tried to find the
command.com file on my computer, which I could not find.
Which, from what I understand means that I have problems
with the Ntvdm subsystem--whatever that is--LOL

Also, when typing in the initial info from #324767 that
says
expand d:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand d:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32
\autoexec.nt
expand d:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit
I get a message that says "no destination specified for"
which ever line I typed

I am totally computer illiterate--or maybe programming
illiterate --and I need help...I need a serious walk-
thru...I did have trouble finding %systemroot%, but then
found it--I think. I was suppose to copy and paste stuff
that I had typed in notepad...HELP

I really appreciate anyone taking time to help me with
this one...thank you

Thank you for the URL, but I don't understand it. I
cannot find config.nt or autoexec.nt on the XP CD-ROM
(this was the second option I could use), because I also
do not know what a REM statement is--which was from the
first option. I did the command.com "test" and it cannot
be found, so I know that something is wrong, but I am not
sure what to do.
Please help--I need to access my children's curriculum
that is on CD on my computer--I have been trying to fix
this for over a week and they start homeschool August 2.
Thank you.

Hi
I had the same error, but i resolved it.

-open the start-->run and tape: cmd, then Enter.
-in the command line copy the lines below then tape Enter.

expand d:\i386\config.nt_ c:\config.nt
expand d:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\autoexec.nt
expand d:\i386\command.co_ c:\command.com

-copy the files c:\config.nt, c:\autoexec.nt, c:\command.com and
c:\config.sys to c:\windows\system32
-and the problem is resolved.

NOTE:
- I tried to expand directly in the c:\windows\system32 but it give
the same error : "no destination specified for". So I changer the
directory, My system is Windows 2000 professionnel, Hope it works for
XP.
- REM statment is just the command to set a comment in a script
REM line comment
the line comment is not executed.

ayachy.

The top solution worked for me. My visual studio 6.0 got corrupted and
would give me error message when i tried to open it. I tried to remove
it and re-install it again but got the same error as above. Thanks!!
