I really like the design of the Zalman CNPS3100+ heatsink

Too bad it doesn't keep my CPU cool.

I have no trouble applying the thing. The design is simple and
elegant. Why it doesn't work is a mystery (at least to me).

I do have some guesses.

.... maybe the heatsink clip is too weak

.... maybe the copper on the bottom is too rough (it looks smooth,
but maybe it isn't smooth enough)

.... maybe there is not enough copper on the bottom

I reassembled a totally disassembled AMD Athlon XP 2400+ stock CPU
heatsink (tried to use it like the Zalman heatsink). Reassembled,
that 2400+ heatsink keeps the Athlon XP 3000+ almost 5°C cooler than
the Zalman. The stock AMD heatsink clip is stiff/tight.

I do like the FB123 fan assembly which fastens to the add-in card
rack. I now have two of those. I got the Zalman flower heatsink
cheap, so it is a small loss.

You don't say anything about your use of goop. Do you have any thermal
paste between the processor and the heatsink? If not, get some and put
it in there. That should fill in those very small gaps and allow heat
transfer to happen much better.

Just to confirm that you have some problem of some kind:
Zalman 7000AlCu and 7000Cu works wonderfully for me. I love them.
I have however only used it for P4 and A64.
- The 7000Cu is problematic because it is so heavy!
It needs lots of attention to the mounting, and "weak" spring does not
sound good to me.

Yes, of course. I did not mention the type of grease because it
was the same for both heatsinks.

How hot is CPU? AMDs are only over temp at 90C according to AMD. 60C is
OK. How fast is fan? XP2400 will need more than slow speed.
