Well I finally got everyone working well together with one exception. That
exception being that Network places in XP doesn't show the Vista machine on
the main page but does show and access it if you choose show workgroup
computers from the network places screen.

Two big issues for those who, like myself, believe they have done all the
steps in the instructions. I feel like a dork admitting I missed these
things but if it helps *anyone* I can live with it.

Many have said these things here already but they bear repeating, with some
embellishments!

1) Don't assume that turning ON sharing in vista has actually done the
necessary steps, in my case one major one was missed!

In adapter properties on the vista machine double triple quadruple check
that File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks is CHECKED. Mine was
not, although you'd think this would be done by enabling public folder
sharing and file sharing in the Network sharing Center! (Otherwise what the
hell do those settings do anyway?)

2) Go into the advanced adapter settings for TCP/IP on your XP (or I assume
any NON Vista) machines and make sure you ENABLE NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Don't
assume that the automatic or as needed setting that it may already be set to
is working with your router.. Ahem...

As always, ymmv but I hope at least one person reading this gets some joy!

Thanks Joe. I did have the sharing correct on the Vista, but I didn't have
the TCP/IP setting checked on the XP machine. That still wasn't quite enough
though. I had to turn off User Accounts on the Vista machine. After I did
that, I finally got through from the XP system. I still had to use my User
Name and password though. But...IT'S FINALLY WORKING! I was even able to map
a drive to the Vista machine.

Glad to hear it!

1) If you want to get to stuff w/o the password and account login simply set
public folder sharing to (Anyone with access can open change and create
files)

2) Turn off password protected sharing


This should automatically share all of the public folders w/o any further
need for defining access rights.
For other folders etc I believe one can simply define these rights in the
share properties
