XP thinks there is no printer connected, but it's not sure.

I have winxp Home sp3. This is both an XP and a printer question.

Someone gave me a Canon Multipass F50 all-in-one. I like it because
most fax machines can't easily be turned off, but I only get one fax
maybe every 6 months, so I don't want to leave it on all the time.

When I try to install the software, it says that I have to have the
printer connected, so I connect it and turn it on, and the install
still says it can't find it.

But if I go to Device Manager, it lists F50, with a yellow question
mark!!!!!!!

This is when it's connected by USB. IIRC, when it was only connected
by a parallel cable, even Device Manager didn't know about it.

I havent' tried it connected both by USB and a parallel cable.

The person who gave this to me doesn't know much about computers, but
said it wasnt' working well, with no details. Still, if it were
working at all, woudln't XP fully know it was there?

Is there any way to trick it into thinking the printer is there at
least long enough to ilnstall the software?

Or other advice?

Thanks.

You need to find the drivers for the printer. Check Canon's site obviously.
Once the driver is installed XP should see the printer and make it useful
when you plug it in to a USB connection. It's likely you manually have to
add the printer if it's connected via the LPT port.

I'll have to cheak on a few things and get back to you. I'm too sleepy
to check now. :-)

That's where they should be, but if you look at the files that are
there, both for 2000 and XP, there are no drivers. There is only a
driver updater, which does nothing, perhaps because I have no driver
to update.

With the possible exception of Easy WebPrint, there is no software
either, only software updaters and pdf files about updating.

(I wonder why it is this way!)

That's why I wrote to Canon and they told me the files were not
available for download, and they sent me a CD. Running the CD led
to the original question.

But I have to check some things to give you a more complete answer.
Tomorrow is very busy, but I hope to work on the questions and get
back to you tomorrow. Expeicially if you're not on the XP group,
which moves pretty fast and if it takes me two days, you might not see
my reply.

Did you look on the CD to see what was there? Driver maybe (as well as the
softwre I mean)?

Did you try uninstalling the printer via device manager, shutting down,
plugging in the printer and rebooting? Does Windows "find new hardware"?

No. All I did was look in autorun, which had something like
mainmenu.exe. So I ran mainmenu.

Didn't do that either. It's a good idea. I forgot, in my first spurt
at installing it, over a week ago, Windows once did Find new Harware,
I think, but it hasn't done it since. I thought if new hardware was
never installed, XP would find it every time I booted. (Sometimes I
hibernate, but not every time.)

I"ll try these things. Might not have time today.

Thanks.

You went to a bunch of work, and I apologize for not giving the whole
story at the start. I sometimes don't know how much to include and I
didn't foresee you'd do this, or even that Sunny would find the Canon
url, or even that pjp would take time telling me to do what I'd done.

People in other groups pick on my for being too wordy. Maybe they are
affecting me, and I shouldn't let them do that here.

Sorry, and Sorry, Sunny and pjp.

Oh, as to nodevice, I came across them recently, maybe for something
else, and something about them made me distrustful too. I googled
nodevice scam and got hits that said it worked.

At least one of these sites always includes a "universal driver
checker" or downloader and in one case where what I wanted had an
obscure name (probably the original name, by some place that thinks
they're the only software company in the world and they don't have to
give files meaningful names), I actually confused the two files and
tried to install the driver downloader instead, and it asked me some
question that made me nervous so I didn't finish. But if it hadn't
asked any questions, I would have installed it. I don't remember if
this was nodevice or not.

(See how wordy I get. That's why I've been trying to be brief.
:-( )

Have you tried this printer on another computer ?
If you get the same issues there, then chances are the printers own
electronics are toast.
