XP SP2: Device Manager is Empty

Hi all,

My Windows XP SP2 "Device Manager" is completely empty. Whilst searching
for a possible solution, I noticed that the general recommendation is to
stop and restart "Plug and Play". Unfortunately the Stop and Start
buttons for this service are all greyed out / disabled. This includes
both the Services snap-in and within the "Plug and Play" Service
properties dialog.

I was able to set the service to disabled, reboot and then manually
start Plug and Service but the Device Manager window was still empty.

I've noticed a number of posts from people who have had the same problem
but I've not seen a solution anyway.

I'd be most grateful if anyone could offer any assistance

Cheers

Rich

Please repost to one of the active and appropriate newsgroups.
Windows XP and SP2 are no longer in beta.

Dear Mike Brannigan [Microsoft]

Could you please provide a link to the proper, active, appropriate newsgroup
rather than just telling us to repost it there? This would be a much greater
help than just verbally slapping our hands because we posted in the wrong
group. Information that XP and SP2 are no longer in beta offers little
assistance to those in need and asking for help.

Last time I checked, Microsoft had several hundred active news groups, and
since it is apparent that you know what group this type post is NOT
appropriate in, perhaps you could enlighten us uninformed folks as to which
group IS appropriate by providing a link to it.

Of course, maybe it isn't in Microsoft's best interest to assist a user in
need of information. Telling us what we are posting in the wrong group but
never tell us where to find the correct group isn't much help.
