I see this all over the message boards but I haven't found
an assured answer.

XP sp1 freezes with no applications running. I have
checked the Task manager, but nothing looks suspicious.

Ran scandisk
Ran defrag
Ran adaware
Ran Spybot S&D
Cleaned out the case, processor and fans.
Reseated the cards.

10 GB free space on HD
128 MB RAM.

Nothing seems to be dragging down the processor memory.
No spikes and such that are evident.

This all just started yesterday, out of the blue. There
have not been any downloads and installs for 2 weeks on
this machine. Just the basic applications are installed
and all up to date.

Is there an answer to this issue?

Go to the hard drive manufacturers website and download their hard
drive diagnostics.

HD is okay.. used Western Digital's diag tool.

Ran the repair tool for XP.

Looks like ripping and reinstalling the mouse hardware is
what took care of it.

We shall see how long THAT lasts.
