Im in the middle of a big problem

I turned on my computer, and I got some error about
windows and my hd, and since i had a similar problem like
this on my old gateway comp, i decided to reformat the
comp and reinstall my XP pro on the comp. The comp had
been reformatted, and what ended up happening is that as
it went to the XP install screen, i get this error.

"failed installation: E:/1386/asms. The parameter is
incorrect. One or more of the components Windows needs for
installation is unable to be installed."

Now when i got this problem, I thought that maybe it was
just the cd, so i went and got my friend's copy of XP pro,
and tried it with that, but the same error came up. Ive
tried repairing the installation, and basically everything
i could think of to see if it would work, and all results
prove negative. I think its possible that it is a hard
drive error, but before i jump to costly conclusions, i
would like to know if there is a solution to this problem
based on the installation and formatting process of XP
Pro. Someone please help me~!

Loading xp on E: drive ? By default it should always be installed
to C:,if youre useing multiple hds disconnect them physically, have
only mouse, keyboard installed, revert back to on board graphics if
you have them. With pro,you can and should be booting to xp cd,
then select install xp,new copy, even with a faulty old installation
of xp,the drive gets reformatted and new copy gets installed.
