Two concerns. When I turn off my machine at the end of the day, XP home
doesn't always shut down. It hangs up on "Windows is shutting down" screen.
Any suggestions?

Recently, the time display in the lower right corner of the Start ribbon has
vanished. I don't think I dropped it anywhere. Suggestions?

Press the Windows key (or Ctrl+Esc) to pop up the start menu. Does it
appear as expected? If yes, check taskbar settings :

Pop up start menu, then open Control Panel --> Taskbar/Start Menu
Properties. Turn off Autohide. Place check next to "keep the taskbar on top
of other windows." OK your way back to the taskbar.

If the taskbar has been accidentally resized to a tiny sliver, move the
mouse to the edge of the screen where the start menu popped up from. When
the cursor changes to a double arrow, left click to "grab" the edge of the
taskbar and pull it to increase the height of the taskbar. NOTE: You may
need to unlock the taskbar before you can resize it.

Also, no appearance of the taskbar at all (popping up start menu fails) -
the system has been infected with malware that needs to be removed.

PS: Also check in Taskbar/Start Menu Properties that "show time on taskbar
is checked on the Taskbar page.

If the taskbar seems cut off after all of your adjustments, you may need to
readjust the edges of your desktop using the manual controls on your
monitor
