talking to Linksys about it but i went 0 for 3 with them.
Don't bother wiping out your network and starting from
scratch. That doesn't work either. I tried reconfiguring
the whole network, wireless and everything. Dind't
help. Let me know if you find out anything. I'll do the

Alright, this problem is plauging me and keeping me up nights. Im
basically in charge over about 60 computers. All running XP pro. So
ive worked here about 6 months, everything is fine. I go home one day,
we have a power outage. Our servers are hooked to a UPS and it wasnt
off for that long so i dont even know if that has something to do with
it. But, i come back and every single computer now cannot browse
workgroup and comes up with this error:

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions.

the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Ive researched and ive tried everything and the kitchen sink. Ive
restarted the computer browser service and the server service. But the
real kicker is i got it to work for about 10 seconds using someones
suggestion. Then i use a totally different suggestion and it works for
about 5 seconds. But really what i need is an understanding of why it
doesnt work. And how i can permanently fix it. We have no firewalls
except getting out of the building. There are none enabled on any of
the 60 machines.

Its been suggested that maybe every computer is acting as a server and
is holding an election to find the master browser to serve out the
list of computers? I havent set them up as servers. They can ping the
computers just fine, they can even put in UNC paths and get to them.
But they cannot browse the workgroup. I reaaallyyy would apreciate
help with this one. Because ill admit right now im clueless.

Try Enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all computers.

I would love to, except for the fact that we have no WINS server and
NetBIOS broadcasts consume quite a bit of bandwidth. I dont think the
boss would be to happy if i slow his network down that much just to
browse something he can already get to through UNC paths. Furthermore
i searched the microsoft knowledge base and found only 1 article as a
resolution to my problem. And i already had that solution in place. To
no avail, it doesnt work. So that wasnt to comforting either. Thank
you for the suggestion though.

Well, i have fixed the problem atleast for the moment. And it worked
more than 10 seconds go figure? And guess how i did it? Changed the
workgroup name. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe it has to do with
having the workgroup name "Workgroup" maybe it doesnt. Not sure why it
helped but it seemed to have fixed the problem.

I think our problem has to do with the routers somehow getting
disrupted during a power outage and started to filter out anything
that was workgroup. Because any other name works fine besides
workgroup.

Can't someone from Microsoft fess up and admit there is a problem? Better yet, how about a solution that works?!?!

I too have run into this problem and I doubt your fix will be permanent
I do think the order in which you define, add computers and initialize th
router has something to do with it. But I don't have a permanent fix an
have encountered this problem several times
