with file explorer, do a search for filename wordpad with advanced
options set to show hidden and system files...

if search finds it, right click and "send to desktop as shortcut"

Not a hardware problem. Suggest you post in .microsoft.windowsxp.general
newsgroup.

On my XP machine, Wordpad is located at "C:\Program Files\Windows
NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"

WORDPAD.EXE is most likely located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

You could make a desktop icon by a right-click on that file, send to,
desktop (create shortcut)
