Word file size grows when replacing VISIO graphics

I have a document that had about 12 visio drawings in
it. In visio I did a copy/page and then in word selected
the previous visio and did a paste. It replaces the
graphic as expected. However, it seems like the file
keeps the old image somewhere internally and doesn't
delete it. My word doc is now around 15 meg, where the
visio file with all the drawings is about 700k. Is there
a way to have word remove all of the old history in it to
make the file smaller. Back in Word 2.0, a save/as would
do it, but that doesn't seem to do it for this file.

Thanks.

Alexis

Extra info:

Using Word 2003
A PDF of the file comes out to 534k

Saving it in Word 97 format makes the file 131 meg
