In a W2k AD Domain with only one NT4 Server do I need to run a WINS
server. I have DNS which works fine and currently do not run any WINS
server. Could I get round it by adding a Hosts file or is ther eno
need. I do get some poor performance from the NT4 machine

Thanks

Ed

Hi,

It depends on what operating system your clients are and what applications
you are using. Windows NT and 9x clients will need NetBIOS and many legacy
applications are NetBIOS dependent.

W9x, ME and NT4 need WINS, so yes, you still need it.
Make sure the ipconfig/all shows that everything is pointing to the
server-IP.

All my clients are 2000 and XP, the only pre 2000 machine
is this NT4 server, can I set up a local WINS on it and
point it at itself or does it have to be on one of the 2K
machines.

Thanks

Ed

Install WINS on your Domaincontroller and add options 044 and 046 (0x8) in
DHCP-server, Scope options.
