Beware of Winfixer ! A mutating Spyware that cannot be removed. If it has infected your PC, respond with a repair, otherwise theories are useless. My son does this for a living and invited his HP system analyst friend to help. No Dice..

Be advised read completely before proceeding
Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Make sure you give me the above log file first before proceeding any further.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I recently spent a few manhours on recovering a PC that contained a myriad of spyware, malware, trojans and al sorts of dark dirty warez.

Winfixer was one of the programs installed on it. When I took it back and told her not to bother with such "PC protection apps", she said she'd just subscribed to it. Subscription? For Spyware ? Eeesshh !

If you try to remove WinFix and are unable to do so, a system restore to a previous check point may work before you try doing something more drastic.

IMHO, I'd stay away from all these things (WinFix, WinChecker, Nuts and Bolts, and so on and so forth ** Im nto saying all these are spyware, but IMHO, they aren't needed).

You need three applications to look after your PC; antivirus, firewall and antispyware !

As long as you go for ones that other people have used and rate highly, like Grisfoft AVG Free and Zonelabs Zone Alarm and Spybot Search & Destroy , you can't go wrong, especially if you keep them up to date and perform scans regularly, weekly at least.

To make things a little more water tight, why not try installing a secodnary spyware removal app for adhoc checks, like Adaware and Panda Active Scan.

So leave all the "we'll keep your PC in tip top order" programs alone, they only use up system resources or worse ! This is what i tell my customers.

Oh and scandisk and defrag every now and then will do no harm.

Thank you for your reply, I use just the basics and have for many years, Spybot S&D, AdawareSE 1.06, and HiJack This. Antivirus is the latest Norton with one button repair feature, and Go Back [prior to boot for crashes].
This has nothing to do with any of those. I just learned today on national news it's malware using a 'worm' and Winfixer is the victim. It's going to take a 'patch' to fix this and Microsoft is going to have to do it. My son, as I said, does this repair professionally for the last 5 years. A Sys. Analyst from HP couldn't repair it. If you hear a fix please let me know.

I've just come across Winfixer on a Sony laptop and it was simply removed in Add/Remove Programs.
Are there different versions of this beastie?

"Winfixer" ... is not a problem, per 'say (though I don't use these things) ... it's the little bugger that is attaching itself to it that is.

That is to say ... some 'nastie' is using Winfixer to hide in.
