I have a new EPoX 8GRA+ board w/ 512 MB of memory.
XP says it is 480 MB memory, which is 32 MB short of 512, which is a
multiple of 16 and a multiple of 2,
which worries me a bit.
%^)

You think one of the memory modules on the thing is bad ?
Maybe I just need to poke it in harder ? Re-seat it ? Try a different memory
bank ?

Will only "part" of a memory stick show up like that sometimes ?

I think I will try Goldmemory or memtest on it.

It should show up as 512 though, right ?

The POST on this thing is so fast I dont even have time to read it really
....
But I guess i need to pay close attention ...

cheers,
e

p.s. sorry for asking a question before thouroughly troubleshooting ...
I'm at work and have school afterwards , so only have tiny little windows of
time to work on this,
and i thought i would pry you guys for advice ....

what you have in mind to do when you get a chance is exactly what I would do....memory modules can be detected in many different
ways....the multiple of 16 is a very common bad bank. Also some MB dimms don't like double sided you checked all that?
Bios and turn off 'fast boot'.....maybe turn down the memory timings, just to see if that solves the symptom, if it does, take the
modules and have them hard tested.

Must likely if you have a 32MB onboard video card it will take the memory
required for the video card from the system memory. I couldn't find the
specs for your specific board, but the EPoX 8RGA+ board has onboard GForce
MX video card which is shared.

Your motherboard has a GeForce 4MX built in video.
It is probably set in your BIOS to use 32MB shared RAM?
The video is "borrowing" 32MB for it's own use.

That leaves 32MB (video) + 480MB (system) = 512MB (total)

EPoX 8GRA+ "G" for graphics. 32MB is reserved for video. Entirely normal.

wow ...
i am so glad i asked here first ...
%^)
i kind of feel like a doofus.
i've never used a motherboard with on-board video ... i just wanted to save
some money cause this
computer is a second computer just for fun .....

i had already d/l goldmemory and was ready to "get nazi" with this board
.....

i feel confident, if course, that given enough time i would have eventually
figured this out ...

It's a common enough question for those using onboard graphics. No need to
"get medieval" on your new board.

On the other hand, don't let us dissuade you from giving the 480MB the
once over with your d/lded GoldMemory just to make sure it is all good.
