I came across this recently and I tried a few different fixes that I found
through knowledge base and various PC sites. It is not something I have
seen before, even with all the machines I have worked on.

When you open the Search tool in Windows Explorer, point at the host drive
(C, type in a file name, and then hit "Search", it immediately bogs down
and even after a few hours, won't return anything. Nothing else seems to
stop working, but if you put your pointer over the window in which the search
is performing, you get an hourglass.

Has anyone seen this before? I remember something similar with the first
release of Windows Desktop Exporer in AD Domain environments, but this is not
the case here.

Suggestions from knowledgable techs appreciated. Please note that I am an
IT professional, not a do-it-yourselfer, with a good amount of experience
with all versions of windows up to Windows 7.

Thanks,

I haven't had the exact problem but a few times I uninstalled the search and
then reinstall which fixed my problem. Have you tried that yet?
