Hello all,

I am having a strange problem with the installer and need
some help.

After downlaoding updates and and fixes for my computer
(W2KPro) I started having tons of problems. After 9 hours
on the phone with Microsoft and removing everything I
updated, i have most of my computer back with 2 exceptions.

When my computer logs on, the windows installer attempts
to re-load Easy CD Creator 5 from Roxio, even though it is
already loaded. When i tell it where the MSI file is, it
simply quits. Secondly, when i log onto Internet
Explorer, the installer comes up and says "Preparing to
install", yet does nothing else.

My main problem with all of this is now my CD/RW drive
doesn't read the DirectCD files. i have attempted to
unistall and reinstall Roxio, but when ever I do the
system tells me "There is an install already in progress"

If anyone has any suggustions I would SO appreciate it.

My name is Dennis Schmidt. Thank you for using the Microsoft Newsgroups.

The problem is caused by the failed install\uninstall. Try using the
following steps:

1. Go to start, run and type regedit.
2. Navigate in the registry editor to
hklm\software\microsoft\windows\current version\installer\inprogress.
3. Click on the inprogress key and note the name of the file listed on the
right side for databasepath (should be have a .msi extension).
4. Rename inprogress to oldinprogress.
5. Close the registry editor.
6. Open My Computer.
7. Navigate to C:\Windows\Installer (Installer folder is hidden by
default) and rename the file noted in step 3.
8. Reboot the computer and try the install again.

KB articles 319624 and 324906 seem to be the most common fixes for this type of
issue (they're really describing the same problem).

Dennis,

I appreciate the help, but unfortunately there none of the
filenames you listed on my computer. I checked ALL of the
registry and both the windows and program files folders on
my hard drive. I did find the installer folders, but
there were no "inprogress" folders after that.

At this point I have about given up. I've ran a dozen or
so repairs and 2 re-installs, it just doesn't help.
