Windows explorer 2000

When I open explorer sometimes, my screen goes blank and
windows restarts with less icons in system tray and loss
of any open applications and unsaved data. I cannot open
multiple explorer windows without risk of temp shutdown.
If I go to task manager and change explorer.exe priority
to realtime, the situation is much better.
