It seems as though ever since Defender was automatically downloaded to my
computer we have been having trouble with network connections. My computer
is the server. The others on the network have been getting "time out" errors
while running programs that are on the network.

Hello Patti,

The free Windows Defender product is not designed for enterprise management.

There is a .adm file included in the distribution, and you can open it and
see what policies are exposed--they are pretty minimal.

For enterprise use, the Microsoft product incorporating antispyware
functionality and designed for automated deployment and management is
Microsoft Forefront Client Security--

I think that pretty well they will answer your questions.

Windows Defender is never automatically downloaded.

What version of Windows are you running?

How many machines on the network?
