Windows Defender is showing a red flag and the message "Windows Defender
definitions haven't been updated in 14 days". When I click on "Check for
updates" it shows "Windows Defender is up-to-date with definitions and
engine upgrades". Indeed it does show the latest signature version as being
"1.13.1282.6 built on 23/02/2006 at 11:01".

Both these statements could be true if there haven't been any upgrades for
over 14 days. The apparently conflicting statements is worrying. It is
also worrying that there haven't been any upgrades for this length of time.
Is this because there haven't been any new spyware in that time or that
Microsoft is updating sporadically? If the latter is true this product
should not be depended upon.

Hello Bill Try the link below which should give a choice of groups(all web
based I believe)for Defender. Some have had a few probs opening the link,
though.
I'm staying with the MSAS for the moment.

Hmmm. My signature version is "1.14.1315.1 built on 3/8/2006 at 4:06AM".

Not sure what you do to fix -- might reload; also IIRC M$ has a news group
or a FAG tab on their download page that probably addresses the problem.

Yes, I updated XP on 14/02 (patch Tuesday). However, I took your advice
and went into Microsoft Update and found an update to Windows Defender under
the 'Custom' / 'Optional' section. I would have thought that something as
important as Anti-Spyware would have been found in the 'Express' / 'High
Priority' section. Anyway having found and (supposedly) installed it and
re-booted it still insists that the previous version is the latest (a
blatant lie) and is over 15 days old (at least that is correct).

The plot thickens. I could, of course, re-install WD but I'm loosing
patience and confidence in it. This sort of software is, more than most,
something which needs to be trusted to work properly.
