I have installed windows defender correctly and i didnt get any error during
installation. But am not able to see the windows defender icon along in the
system tray. I do not know whether windows defender is running in the back
ground. Can anyone suggest me the following:
1. HOw to check whether windows defender is running in the background?
2. HOw to enable windows defender to startup when the PC is switched on?
3. How to ensure that windows defender icon is made visible in the system
tray?

Guys, kindly help me out.

Thanks

Hello Baba,

> 1. HOw to check whether windows defender is running in the background?

If you select the Process tab you should see MSASCui.exe (the user
interface), and MsMpEng.exe (the service executable) running.

MpCmdRun.exe monitors for the existence of new signatures and is responsible
initiating the updating process when new signatures are available.

In Windows Defender--real-time protection is done by a system service,
starting at boot time--that's the Windows Defender service, whose executable
is MsMpEng.exe.

In Tools ->Options, scroll down half page, and check the box.

Hello Engel,

I have got answers for the first two questions, but in the third question,
you have asked to do the following: Tools ->Options, scroll down half page,
and check the box

But in the Tools menu, i could see only six categories: General settings,
Microsoft spynet, quarantined items, software explorer, allowed items and
windows defender website.

I could not see any cateogory as options, where i could check the box.
Hence I request you kindly to recheck the procedure.

Thanks and Regards,
Anand G.

Baba - You're one version back on the UI code, I believe. Here's what to
do:

1) go to the Microsoft download site and re-download Windows Defender:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

run the download, it will update what you have in place.

Once updated, go back to tools. General settings will now be labelled
Options, and when you open that, and scroll down to the bottom of the
Real-time protection options area, you'll find checkboxes to control display
of the icon.
