Just wondered if anyone has seen this before.

Don't know what has happened but on Sunday suddenly both my external USB
CD-Rom and Internal CD Rom drives
on my laptop suddenly stopped reading cd-rom disks containing data.
Audio cds play fine but any data discs such as backups, games or software
discs result
in the same message if browsed in explorer:-

Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could
be using a format that is not compatible with Windows.

I have re-installed drivers, been through google but nothing I could find or
do made a difference.
I did a virus scan with f-prot and a spyware scan with spy-doctor but
nothing helped.

I'd be gratefull if anyone has any ideas what do to.

I also removed the USB cd-rom drive and plugged it into myother laptop and
it worked fine.

Very Frustrating.

I would suspect a corrupt USB HUB device, try uninstalling both HUBS, and
restart.

Tried that but no joy.
The device is working fine in most respects.
I can burn CDs.
I can play audio CDs.
I can rip audio CDs.

It just wont display datafiles in explorer or cmd and just continues to
report the same old

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it
could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows."

I see alot of people in newsgroups with exactly the same problem but no one
seems
to know the answer apart from re-install XP which I really want to avoid.

SOLVED.
I booted off the O/S disk and ran a repair.
All works fine now.

I am facing the same problem. I searched a lot on Internet and found many solutions but none worked for me.

In fact I installed Win XP Pro on a IBM 570E Laptop and after finalizing the installation DVD ROM is not working. It does not take any CD at all. I know that DVD is okay as Windows XP installation is made by this.

I tried all the obvious things like removing, reinstalling, updating BIOS but no luck. Even I can't opt to reinstall as it is no longer booting from Win XP Bootable drive (From Which I installed XP last night).

What could be reason for that???

I've got the saaammeee problem. I'm using Windows XP, have spent about 5
hours trying to fix it. I don't consider myself an expert, but not a novice.
Thinking that it does read the disc when booted, I figured it might be a
program in my startup menu that would have been affecting the readability of
the cd drive. NOPE, that ain't either, it did the same thing, once I ejected
the cd and placed it again (same one), not readable.

I've also uninstalled and re-installed the hardware, followed the XP
troubleshoot window for cd drives, (the only thing the damn thing said was
that it couldn't freaking help me). Yes, I'm getting upset, matter of fact,
I'm looking at my 4 year old iMac next to me, and appreciating the fact that
it has only let me down (something wrong with it) 3 times since I've owned
it. Yet the Windows XP has had 3 things wrong with it (MAJOR THINGS) since
the start of this year. I was planning on buying a sweet 12 inch laptop this
summer, and I'm seriously thinking about making it a Mac instead.

I really don't want to re-format and re-install Windows XP again, I already
did that last year, and did it last week for another comp. (different
problem). I'm thinking it could have gone bad due to the security upgrades,
I've actually been keeping up with them as they've come out, I've heard that
it may not be a good idea to do so (compatibility issues)..

Aneways, just needed to gripe. I'm really starting to rethink the way I use
my PC, I think I will use it more for personal entertainment such as
downloads, surfing, games, and use my MAC for important things such as
Business.

Any Suggestions??????

Thank YOu,
Pico
