in win2k server you could take ownership (administrator) of the user
profiles directory easily enough to enable backup/admin.
in 2k3 as soon as you take ownership of the profiles folder + all its
contents, users are no longer able to access their profiles - usually an
access denied error or for example :-

Windows did not load your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on
with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the
server when you logoff. Windows did not load your profile because a server
copy of the profile folder already exists that does not have the correct
security. Either the current user or the Administrator's group must be the
owner of the folder. Contact your network administrator.

Are you certain that after taking ownership the account
whose profile it is was left with full control ?
Why is the ownership an issue anyway, as an account with
backup right should be able to do the backup.
