hello.

i am having a problem whereby my windows xp (sp2) clients are not
attempting to update their dns hostname dynamically.

i am using 'ipconfig /registerdns' to force the dns update, and
can verify that an attempt is not being made both by using a packet
sniffer on the client as well as on the server; no dns update is
sent.

the following conditions are true:

- the dhcp client service is running on the client
- the "register this connection's address in DNS" box is checked
- in the registry:
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters\
interfaces\[active interface]\DisableDynamicUpdate is 0
- despite promises from 'ipconfig /registerdns', nothing is
showing up in the event viewer

perhaps telling is that

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters

contains no keys. but this still doesn't work if i create a key
with the name that represents the active interface.

these conditions are true regardless of whether the ip information
is assigned statically or through dhcp.

please help. i am running out of ideas.

I wish I had the answer to your problem. But I am experiencing the same
problem with WIN2k workstations and servers. I have 6 DNS servers in three
sites hosting the same AD integrated zone for our domain (single domain
forest). I also have our DHCP servers added to the DNSProxy group. I would
really like to deploy DNS scavenging.

I have a very small test environment comprised of a 2003 DC, a 2000 members
server and a Win2k workstation. After turning on and configuring DNS
scavenging my boxes seemed to start updating their DNS timestamps. But I
can't go on a "seemed to happen" scenario. This is a Fortune 500 company and
if I were to lose a server's DNS record.......

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
John

Are all clients and servers using the AD DNS servers, only?
