I want to burn my movie to a DVD (first time for me!) so first I will save my movie to my computer. Which setting should I choose

Use dv-avi. This is the best you can get, and often the only one most dvd
authoring apps will take on import. Although this is the best for making
dvds, you can make many errors in the actual making as well, so choose the
app you use to make teh dvd with care, and read up on the settings you can
make at this stage, because these can make so much of a difference to your
finished project.

Default settings are a good place to start.
Roxio is not a dedicated dvd authoring app, so your choices will be limited,
but to get you going it should be fine.

Roxio is not a dedicated dvd authoring app, so your choice of settings will
be limited, but to get you going it is a good start.

Their latest version, Easy Media Creator, does include DVD authoring (as
does v6, Easy CD/DVD Creator) but neither are exactly easy to use. However
I doubt that an OEM version contains either of these features, the poster
would need to purchase the full version.

v6 is about 470mb, v7 is a whopping 895mb. So you need to install it before
you can burn it to a data DVD for safe keeping!

Sue,
For a short while I'd perhaps suggest sticking with roxio. After a little
while, when you start to understand what dvd burning is about, then might be
the time to investigate what others are around.
Of course, if you are seriously in to making dvd's then there are lots of
choices for you and it will come down to budget and what you intend to do in
the way of making dvd's. If it's purely a few home movies then the cheaper
end of the scale will more than likely suffice, giving you choices on your
menu's/bitrates etc.... then you could work your way up to the more
expensive apps, such as u-lead dvd workshop, one I use, which gives you
motion menus etc etc....
Again I suggest a read of www.dvdrhelp.com lots of info there, also if you
wish use www.simplydv.co.uk where there is a forum for joining in.
So as to suggestions, ulead do dvd movie factory or dvd workshop. There is
tmpg dvd author, dvdlabs, pinnacle do studio 9 which is an all in one app,
editing/encoding/burning, but perhaps not as good as the separates, but very
easy to use.

I just want to say, "Thank You!" for all the advice and help. I will stick with Roxio for now and see how I do. I just finished burning my first dvd and it looks pretty darn good. I added music and muted some of the voices in some of the clips. I even added a slideshow at the end of the video with some stills I took. Movie Maker Two really has some nice features. It's so much fun. I'm sure I will want something better then roxio in the future but for now I am satisfied.

The top of the line editor for a desktop PC would probably be Adobe's
Premiere and you can download a trial version if you are interested. The
full version would however cost $699 (Amazon.com price). www.adobe.com.

However I probably edit digital video at least twice weekly and am perfectly
happy with MovieMaker2... and with Roxio's Easy Media Creator v7 for my
burning needs. Well over 100 DVDs burned and not one coaster. Ditto for
CDs, but probably more in the range of 500 burned and only a couple of
coasters.
