Vuescan autorop not working in 8.3.53?

I've been struggling with the auto-crop feature of Vuescan for quite a
while. After improvements were announced in 8.3.46 I thought I'd try a
new version of Vuesan once again.

I've downloaded and installed 8.3.53 but I'm pretty disappointed. The
auto-cropping basically does not work. Here's a link to a picture how
the auto-cropping algorithm currently works (only a small part of the

Unfortunately I cannot roll back to my previous version (8.3.39). When
trying to do so, I get the following error message:

Nevertheless Vuescan can be started but does not scan properly.

Have any of you encountered similar problems and found any workarounds?

Can you try removing all files from the Vuescan directory before you try
to install the old version ? Or even removing the Vuescan directory and
all its files ?

I removed the entire C:\vuescan directory prior to the installation.

Do you mean it never works, or is it on some specific images?
I'm sure Ed Hamrick would love to use your example to improve the
detection algorithm or it's sensitivity to edge detail. It may also
have to do with the preview resolution, if you bump that up on the
"Input" Tab, it might help matters.
Make sure you feed back your example to Ed Hamrick, how else could he
(and we for that matter) benefit from your observation.

While that's a (relatively) old version to revert to, you possibly
didn't follow the recommendations to delete or rename the existing
VueScan folder, before re-installing any other version. I've never had
installation problems when I allowed VueScan to create a brandnew
VueScan folder.

You could just set the cropping to maximum, instead of Auto. That way
you'll never miss a thing, and you can always crop later.

Good. You could in addition search for other instances of
"vuescan.ini" on your system, prior to re-installation. There may be
another, incompatible, copy of that version specific file on your
machine. Downgrading from a higher version number also could mean that
some of the newer functionality has some new keys in that INI file,
which may confuse older versions.

It particularly does not work well with images that only have a few
black edges left (i.e are almost cropped). Changing the preview
resolution actually does not help.

I've already sent a report to Ed's support e-mail.

There's no other vuescan.ini file hanging around. Unfortunately this is
not the first time I'm experiencing problems after upgrading to a newer
version. I thus always keep all installation executables at hand in
order to perform a roll back, but now it seems that I'm stuck!

Which is already a signal that something else is at play here! I have,
in the many years that I've used VueScan, *never* had a VueScan
installation that does the things you mention, including Win98 and ME
installations. I don't even recall a single installation (besides a
few corrupt downloads) that failed as you described or otherwise.
There must have been maybe a hundred installations (they used to roll
out at an average of 1/week) or more on at least 5 different harddisks
of mine, and several temporary installations on other people's PC when
I worked with their scanners, over the years.

Intriguing, but frustrating no doubt. Have you tried installing with
the virus scanner switched off? Have you tried re-booting (cold
reboot, so wait 15 seconds after switching off) after removal and
before re-installation? Have you tried a fresh download of the latest
version?

I wasn't referring to installation problems, but to problems with the
functionality of Vuescan after upgrading. This is also the first time
that I'm experiencing installation problems.

I now can finally install the version I was having problems with. It
seems that it was a WinXP related problem. Although I was doing the
installation with Admin priviliges it failed. After logging in as Admin
it now works ...

But I'm not amused by the bugs I now found. I'll post them in the other
thread I have related to the scanning of raw files ...

The author re-released VueScan 8.3.53 with a fix to the cropping problem,
a few hours after someone reported the problem to him.

I take back everything bad I've said about him - he provides terrific
support, and VueScan is a wonderful program.
