I don't know if its me but my vista software throws a major tantrum if I fit an additional hard drive. I find invariably that it
wont boot. I can run a repair from the CD but it seems silly to have to do this. Windows XP and earlier versions just found the new
drive during the boot and added it as another drive letter but after fitting an additional hard drive vista gives me an error page
that says winload.exe is missing or corrupt.

I have several external hard drives. Here's what I see.

I turn on the drive (USB 2.0) I immediately get the audio ping that
Windows "sees" it, then a few seconds later it brings up a little
window in the lower right hand corner of your desktop and says it
found a new drive. Depending on how the drive it setup it will either
just show up in Explorer as a new Drive Letter or it may autoplay and
for example show a scrolling lists of files on the drive, then other
times it may present a list of options.

Ditto for internal drives if I add one, only it just adds them and
says it found them.

If you're using a SATA drive to boot off of, all bets off. Lots of
issues from Windows to BIOS to motherboard issues.

Perhaps Vista thinks you are trying to use Vista on another box.

yes, I'm plugging in an internal SATA drive, so the PC has to boot up with the new drive in. Plugging in an external USB drive into
Vista is no problem. I think Microsoft are just paranoid about keeping the installation on one machine and that paranoia has found
its way into the Vista build.

So do you have an active partition on the 2nd drive?

yes

Because the BIOS changes the Hard Disk Boot Priority to some default
order whenever you change the physical configuration of the hard
drives, you have to go into BIOS setup and make sure that the BIOS is
set to boot from the correct disk drive.

yes I've done that, I do it all the time when I want to boot from a different hd.
even tho I change the BIOS to boot from the correct drive Vista still wont boot because it finds a new 'unauthorised' drive during
the bootup.

By chance is your machine equipped with a TPM chip? If so, see if in your
BIOS you can disable TPM.
