Les;
Is your firewall enabled?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673
Exactly what files are "filling up" the hard drive?
Both spyware applications and antivirus been updated within the last
week?

What speed processor?
How much memory?
How much used and Free space on hard drive?

What are System Restore Settings?
Have you tried system Restore to Date/Time before this started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/system Restore
