user/password won't work, new user works but lost all settings!

This started when I decided to changed the Workgroup name. After I did that
and rebooted, the corrrect user name was showing in the login screen, but
the password no longer worked. I typed in a different user name and
password, they worked and the startup continued. When Win2000 came up I had
lost most of my desktop icons, and some programs no longer worked. I had to
reconfigure IE and Outlook Express to get them to work, but all the
Favorites were missing and so were the many folders full of email.

Looking at the harddrive, under Documents and Settings all the original sub
and subsubfolders were still there under the original user name and I could
see that all the favorites were still there, and all the email folders.
There was a new subfolder named after the new user name but there wasn't
much in it. Under All Users there also wasn't much.

I tried restoring a backup of the registry from 3 days ago but that didn't
change anything. I could still only access Win2000 by using the new
username and password. I then tried to add another (new) user using the
original user name and password. But when I rebooted that new(original)
user name had the same loss of settings situation. When I checked in the
hard drive, under Documents and Settings there was a new sub folder named
after this new(original) user name but with the name of the computer
included in the name. There was also the subfolder(with all the Favorites
and email files) named after the original user name.

So what to do? I need to start up Win2000 using my original user
name/password so I can get all my settings back. Or I need to know if I can
transfer all the sub and subfolders and files under the original user
name(in Documents and Settings) into one of the new user name subfolders and
get them to work.

Help would really be appreciated.
