USB printer goes AWOL

My Lexmark X125 disconnects randomly, usually after 2 to 3 days. There
is no power timeout set in
device manager for any of the USB host controllers or hubs (no USB
power required).
The tray Icon turns from a diamond shape to an "X" and the settings
utility will not open.
Dis-and re-connecting the USB and power connections does nothing to
bring it back. Only a reboot.
If I disconnect the power to the printer before it goes AWOL it will
work OK after just re-connecting the power .
Lexmark support tells me repeatedly to un- and re-install the
software, update to latest drivers, etc.
The are clueless.
(My system is WIN2K/SP4, MoBo is ASUS P4S800D-X)

Seems like re-plugging the cable can reset the flashed firmware.
Sounds like an electric problem. You surely tried to plug your printer
with another cable? Or could be that printer tries to draw too much
current to be able to supply such amount via USB bus.
