USB patch for Windows 98SE ?

Hello,

Somebody please tell me if this request is off-topic. I'm looking for
a free patch that will improve Windows 98SE. Is that OT?

I am running Windows 98SE, with several USB devices. All of them work
well, but only when the computer "sees" them, and that happens
intermittently. I have tried but failed to find a pattern in when to
expect the computer to see them.

How to make Windows see the USB all the time?

Sometimes at startup, Windows discovers the USB hardware again, and
reinstalls the software for it.

Windows Device Manager describes the USB hardware as follows. (Note
that some of these entries are repeated):
ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
ALi PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub

Is there any patch that will fix this intermittency?

If you want to suggest that I change OS, go ahead. But that doesn't
answer the question.

Thank you very much!

Ted Shoemaker

I tried to fix this problem a few months ago, but nothing I tried
worked.
So I left win98se and I am now a happy win2000pro user.

If I had known how easy the change was I would have changed long ago.
The change fixed several problems I had lived with for years, important
programs became stable, and now I can use a lot of programs I couldn't
use before.

Win98se simply cannot handle USB reliably, that's what I learned, from
reading a lot of forums about the issue, and from my own experiences.

But maybe somebody else has the answer you want to hear :-)

Good luck. I managed to get my Win98 to recognize all my USB devices through
sheer "guess and by golly" by referring to a variety of websites,
downloading patches here and there, and un-/ re-installing. In the end, I
have no idea what caused it all to come together so can't give you specific
guidance.

As a start, I suggest starting here:
http://www.usbman.com/

Search on all their Win98 references and "work out" from there to all the
external sites and references suggested.

Have you installed 240075up.exe which seems to still be there on the
Microsoft site ?

Hopefully this will resolve the issue especially as I noticed 'A VIA
Technologies USB controller' being noted on that page!

Try assigning your computer's resources in the bios ( typically by
deselecting 'plug and play OS' ).
You might even find an option to set the resources for the USB ports.

I've always set my machines up in this fashion and have never had any
problems with 98SE finding USB devices - and I run a cordless keyboard
+ mouse, two USB ram sticks, two cameras, a webcam and a scanner.

Regards,

Am having problems with USB devices under Win98SE myself. I've got an
RCA Digital Voice Recorder that, when attached makes the IDE to USB
connection on the same hub triplicate, among other things. Then there
are flash readers that seem to install ok, but can't read anything,
and (on a laptop), a USB2.0 PCCard that accepts all the drivers ok,
but never shows up in My Computer.

Have downloaded the above file, and will be interested to hear whether
it fixes Shoemakerted's problem (which, although I'm running an AMD
cpu, I haven't been cursed with yet).

I had this problem with 98SE and flash drives which I cured by
installing a generic driver called JDUSBMS. It IS generic (read the
comments in the .inf file) and has been modified for that purpose by
Haftmann. Try:
