Those who saw my previous post about that software will know
that I had a corrupt database problem.

Well, I contacted support, and they offered to have a look.
Unfortunatly they were not able to do anything.. Fair
enough.. !@#$% happens..

What REALLY got me was the following response..

==Start of quote

I've tried to recover your database but unfortunately I was
unable to do so.
The database did not contain any information, merely a series
of control
characters. It's indeed alarming that this can occur without
any apparent
reason.

Problems similar to this one have been reported to us in the
past and since
then we've taken steps to optimize URLBase Professional
Edition, eliminating
the issue. Unfortunately we haven't been able to implement
this in the
Personal Edition due to circumstances beyond our control. I
feel it's only
fair of me to admit that the Professional Edition has a
higher priority than
the Personal Edition, which has also contributed to the
situation.

Either way I would like to apologize for the inconvenience
caused by this
problem. URLBase Personal Edition will be updated in the near
future but at
this time we do not have a release date yet.

==End

Um, this was three months worth of bookmarks, so it is a bit
more than "inconvenient"..

If this is a way for them to "promot" the pro edition then
they must be kidding !!

It is my sincerest wish and hope that this software be
SKUTTLED. This is BAD stuff, and if it were to become a
regular occurance then freeware would come to a grinding
halt.

A NOTE FOR ARJAN.. I think you use this software for your
list.. Maybe you can comment on this ??

Regards,
KH.

Well, you cannot blame them.
There is a solution called 'regular backups' and there is some
pretty good freeware around.
So no excuses for not doing the proper thing :-)

That is hardly the issue.. Whether I backup or not, it should
NEVER be policy that a developer knowingly releases to the
public buggy s/w unless it is in alpha or even beta stage, and
with clear warning about its problems.. Or, when they find out,
they do not make an effort to fix it..

Not even Microsoft does that !!!

True.
But the claim '3 months work lost' is invalid as the loss should
be limited to the backup period.
Which, imo, should be much shorter than 3 months.

I disagree Gerard - the situation seems to be that they know that
there are problems which can lead to data loss - yet they still offer
the free version without a warning.

I can see someone spending one day inputting info then losing it - how
many of us backup on a daily basis.

Yes we have personal and individual responsibility to look after our
own data - this does not excuse this software developer from doing
something about a known issue

Just my 2c

I might add this conversation about URLBase *Professional * which
refrained me from bying it so far

Hi ...

Currently the integrated browser is based on the Internet Explorer
engine.
Because we share your concern for security reasons (plus Internet
Explorer's lack of industry standards support) we are planning to
switch to Mozilla in the near future. At the moment we're making an
inventory of all the differences between the two engines and the
impact it will have on the implementation in URLBase. I think that the
actual replacement could start as early as next week, with a release
date of the updated URLBase towards the end of this month (keep
fingers crossed).
