Ok I have:
asus a7v266-e
xp 1700+(pallimo i think)
ATI radion 8500
100gb total storage(2 drives 40+60)
712 mb generic 2100 ram
52X cdrom
4X backpack cd RW

I have about $500cdn to spend to upgrade this rig. what would be my
best options? I use it mostly for games and I'm starting to get into
programing.

TIA

learning how to program does not require a terribly hi-end machine
so as far as upgrades go...it;s simply a matter of what you need for maximum
gaming performance...

usually the video card is one of the critical areas

btw: if your generic ram is working ok you might as well leave it...
but next time you build a machine i;d opt for a "name brand"

I think the easiest way would be get a XP 1700 -2000 that you can OC
easily for $50-70 and an ATI 9600 $140 or so. If you want to push it
- sell the MB and processor and memory - $70 or more if you can get it
and buy a Biostar $59 Nforce2 or so or some other board and a bit
faster memory $50 or so for 2700 512 megs.
