This is the most current release of Windows Defender. If Windows Defender
informed you that an update is available, you are running an older version.
We encourage you to upgrade to this version. You can check your version of
Windows Defender by clicking the down arrow next to the help icon and
choosing ‘About Windows Defender’.

Note: If you have version 1.1.1592.0, you must first manually uninstall
Windows Defender before you can install this newer version. To configure or
remove the existing version, use Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.

Say what? Surely this can't be right. And what happens if (when) it's
pushed via WU?

Oh boy, I guess I get another chance to customize all my "Do not scan these
files or locations" as well as reset all the other options... Say
Microsoft, this is getting a little old you know, having gone through that
process two weeks ago with the so called 1592 "Final" overlay of the Beta
in place. Perhaps the upgrade path for the next preliminary "Final" should
include the ability to save prior options... whadda you think? Hey,
looking at the bright side... this time at least I know that it's coming.

But as WD is now a supported product:
Product ID: 81664-821-6468981-04232

How about telling us what's being changed, instead of letting us guess as
we've been doing throughout the unsupported Betas for almost 2 years...

I'm not sure if I understand your question. This is not an engine or
signature update, and I'm not sure if Windows update will offer an update to
the program itself, as I've never seen anything on WU but signature/engine
updates. Anyway, i guess you could wait and see. I un-installed version
1.1.1592.0 and installed this version without a problem, all in about 10
minutes, based on "We encourage you to upgrade to this version", plus the
fact that they took pains to tell you how to uninstall 1.1.1592.0. Even if
it should ever be offered on Windows Update, it would be like downloading
Internet Explorer 7 or .NET Framework 3.0: getting the program from Windows
Download Center now isn't less legitimate than getting it from Windows Update
later. As to why this version is an improvement, who knows (no new release
notes, as of yet).

The new install of 1.1.1593.0 went well, I turned all antispyware- virus and
most programs in system tray off. Followed the directions in the
threads,(minimized) Announcement and went to Add/Remove to remove the older
version. You can't remove older version with Discussions in Announcements
open, I was told to close announcements to remove Defender. Other than that
small bump everything went fine. All who posted Thank you.

Can I just get this straight? After months of finding ways around the crazy
foibles of beta 2, we finally get a final version two weeks ago, - except
that it isn't a final version, because this new one is the 'real' final
version? So I should now ditch the 1592 version (downloaded but not yet
installed) and download 1593 instead? Is that it?

I still have version 1347, and have received no notification of any kind
from Defender itself that there's any need for me to do anything except keep
downloading the updates.

How on earth is any ordinary human being who doesn't check in here every day
supposed to get their head round all these changes? Or even know that a
non-beta version exists?

Lucky you. Some of us have installed it, but now have to uninstall...

But 1592 was a non-beta version, so what is their excuse, exactly, for it
needing to be uninstalled before upgrading to the next non-beta version?

Is this going to be the way it is, or is this some exceptional case?

The only time an uninstall should be required is if you're using a beta
version. And *maybe* if you're upgrading to a major new version, such as
2.0, but even that's questionable.

A minor point release though? Absolutely not.
