When I log on to my computer (local login not domain
login) Windows accepts my password and starts applying my
settings but shortly after it gives me a message saying
that it's saving my settings then kicks me back out to
the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen.

I'm using Windows 2000 and I don't have additional
software on the computer.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

First, try skipping the Startup menu. Type your account
and password, but hold the SHIFT key before you click OK.
Keep holding SHIFT until you reach your desktop; this
bypasses whatever is in the Start/Programs/Startup menu.

If you still get blown off, try doing a safe boot. If you
can log on after a safe boot, then check the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run list
for any nasties.
