unreadable fonts

In various appls with fancy fonts, (games, etc) the fonts are garbled and
vitually unreadable (not in XP dialogs or menus in general--they're ok). The
same fonts read clearly on my other comp. What can I do to fine tune custom
fonts other than resizing (doesn't work)?
