Are you contemplating the U. of Arizona as a possible place to study?
Here is a snapshot of the developing facist like approach of the new
President there, from Chapel Hill UNC, Shelton. Anyone who has attended
UNC knows what an autocratic institution it is with very crappy programs
in many areas of study. He is bringing that mindset here to the
Southwest USA where we USED to enjoy a laissez-faire atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I have to use the public computers at the University of
Arizona.

Their system has been hacked multiple times and they had to call in
outside help for that as they were too ignorant to deal with it on their
own. They have closed circuit, sometimes serrepticious cameras
everywhere to spy on computer users here. They give free phone access,
but do not tell you that you're being monitored on their cameras as you
make your calls. Your phone calls are on their pbx and feed into their
computers so they can ID your phone calls and even use voice recognition
you your calls. They monitor their network and personally intercede with
you on things they find questionable; usually it is nothing questionable
at all, just their own ignorance and bad alarm filters. They keep
running library user feedback surveys that hardly anyone responds to.
Does not really matter, because they do what they want anyways and
usually to the deteriment of users here. The students walk around in a
fog, are non-political and mostly only care to get that damn piece of
paper and get out of this trailer trash town and school.

On doing a virus scan with their own AV program Sophos all the computers
report the MadCodeHook virus, which sophos reports as a "legitimate
library used to intercept system calls of various processes. It may be
used by malicious programs to inject itself into other processes". Yet
the sophos program sends the virus supposedly to "quarantine". Does not
matter as the virus cannot be deleted, it reappears. Also they do not
allow the sophos to check for root kits unless you have systems
privileges. The computers are so disabled you cannot do much without
elevated admin status.

Several times I have had systems people at UA approach me because they
have been monitoring my activity and out of some hundreds of terminals
tracked that activity to my terminal. This is proof that they actively
spy on public users at their public computer access boxes. They are so
stupid that all of these have been false alarms having nothing
whatsoever to do with anything that would DOS other users or compromise
their network. At the same time they do nothing about all the guys using
computers to download kiddie and other porn; several times I have had to
delete kiddie porn from their hard drives on boxes I sat down to anew,
never having used them before. This Shelton guy is a real piece of work.
He looks like an SS Nazi on tv and talks tough about what he is going to
do, while further limiting services to the community that are already
restricted and then begging to the legislature for more money.


Too bad users here cannot use computers which are not so severely
restricted that you cannot install most programs and do many things that
you can on your home computer. Despite their clamping down their public
terminals such that the reduce a $2000 machine to a dumb terminal, they
still cannot afford users here any privacy or security. You really feel
like you're on a 1984 campus here, everything is being watched. They
even have little old maid librarians come around and tell you you cannot
watch porn, even though their systems head was on the evening news
saying porn is ok on UA computers (I kid you not). They have hundreds of
fairly new computers, but it is a waste because you cannot do anything
with most of them unless you're giving an admin. account-way of
separating the owners (re: 1984) from the public.

UNC, where Shelton came from is a facist, screwed up college with no
academic freedom-I know, I attended there briefly before quitting in
disgust with an 4.0 average. Shelton comes across with the same hard-ass
attitude as his alma mater, and is trying to change what used to be a
relaxed UA campus into another UNC gulag. We have even had cases here of
students having their computer access nuked because they do as everyone
else does here-download stuff off P2P networks.

All in all not a very cool place to have to use their computers; trying
to make progress so I will not have to in the future.

One thing is for certain. I bet they do not have cameras in their
Administrative offices, ;-). A search shows UofA has a reputation for
having a hacked and unstable network. They were down today for several
hours.

Yeah, it's frustrating when freedom is being restricted and Big Brother
is always watching you. I can see the privacy issue and soc.college
association, but why is this in the anti-virus group? Here it reads like
a rambling 'stream of consciousness' rant.

If he had mentioned pizza, would it have been crossposted to the pizza

Did you read the op about the madhook virus reported by UofAZ's
computers. Viruses can be used to keylog private information and control
individuals terminals. Another method of eavesdropping or worse.
