The latest model Canon printers while may be better in some respects and
the ink may be more durable is not that much better in producing results
and the IP4000/5000 series and the ink is about 50% more.

At Costco the price for IP4000 ink is under $10.00 a cart while the ink
at Costco.com for the IP4200/5200 is about $15.00. This is not
justifiable. The chip in the cart is really worthless and I do not
think the ink costs any more to make and fill.

It is very unfortunate that there is not one reputable mfg/formulator of
aftermarket ink that will sell prefilled carts under their own name
through mass merchandisers.

So we have a choice of getting screwed by the OEM or really getting
screwed by the scumbags of the industry.

I think you have that backwards, the choice is between getting really
screwed by Canon and getting a really good deal by refilling your own
cartridges from a known source of good quality ink. Using cartridges
filled by others is less of a sure thing, but if you buy Canon, you're
sure of paying too much.

And as measkite has pointed out in the past, there are a few name brand
inks available bulk, a few labled prefills. So it's not a problem.

I disagree on the chips... while spendy I do think they are actually a
decent idea. Otherwise the prism system only tells you when you git
20% full and you sort of have to guess how much more you can print or
risk loosing 1/5 of your investment. I'm sure more than one heater has
been cooked because canon doesn't have a more linier metering system.

But... here's the reality. A set of OEM would run on average about $55
shopping at costco, the exact numbers I gave in the past based on the
fact you can't buy the bci-6 black at costco except in multi-packs.
So that's $110, probally more like $120 but let's say $110 for now.

So using your numbers... two refills would cost you $20 on this $2.00
ink on the ip4000. That's a savings of $90 using your numbers. A new
printhead will cost you using your numbers would be $70. That's a
savings of $30.00 if your printhead expodes after the 2nd refill. And
as we all know... two or three refills is not an unreasonable
expectation on many of the fine products available.

So according to measkite's logic... even assuming he's right and the
thirdparty ink will eventually clog the head... you are looking to save
$30.00. And as we all know he flips out at the idea of buying the
ip6600 because a card reader will save you $15.00. So not only does it
make ecconomic sense, but it makes measkite sense as well. And when
it's a logic that measkite can't deny... well you have an undeniable
truth.

Do the colors also come in 3 packs? I know I could buy cyan, magenta,
and yellow in a three pack but the black, the bci-6 black isn't sold at
all at my costco, and only on the website in a multi-pack. I typicaly
base my estimates on buying a multi-pack of bci-3e black, a tri color
pack, and a single bci-6e black from office depot.

It's fair to say costco has a good deal. It is a good deal.
Multi-packs of bci-3e are dang useful. Multi-packs of bci-6 black are
less so as those tend to outlast everything else.
