I am unable to open "Add/Remove Windows Components" in WinXP (all updates
current). When I try I get an error message that reads:

"Setup was unable to open information file wbemoc.inf. Contact your system
administrator. The specific error code is 0x2 at line 2088999411."

Any suggestions?

Did you search the \windows\inf folder to see if that file was even there?

Extract a new copy of wbemoc.inf from the XP CD. The target folder is
C:\Windows\Inf\

Use the following as examples:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ocmsn.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sysocerror.htm
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/34/1/Error-"Setup-library-comsetup.dll-could-not-be-loaded"-while-opening-Add{47}Remove-Windows-Components

No wbemoc.inf file in \windows\inf folder, just a wbemoc.pnf file. There
are wbemoc.inf files in a c:\i386 folder and in a c:\windows\I386 folder,
however - both the same size. Do I simply copy one of those to the
C:\windows\inf folder or do I need to extract the file from the original CD
to the C:\windows\inf folder?

The i386 folder maintains a compressed version of the file ( namely
"wbemoc.in_" ). You'll have to expand the file from that location (or from
the XP CD).

Thanks. "Add/Remove Windows Components" now opens. Had to expand the
wbemoc.inf file from c:\i386 and then copy wordpad.inf from the
servicepackfiles\I386 folder. I'd like to know what removed these ".inf"
files and what else might still be missing.
