I have tried to install this update thru the Windows
Update web site, and it failed to install. I then
downloaded the update by downloading the fix from the
Windows Update Catalog.

When I run WindowsXP-KB835732-x86-ENU.exe, it runs until
I get a message that says "Access denied".

I am running it thru a user account with administrator
rights. I even tried running it in safe mode using
the "Administrator" Account.

Is there any command line switches that will make the
program log it's installation process?

Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
When trying to access the Windows Update Web site you receive the following
error message: Access Denied. Please check with your System Administrator (WinXP
& Win2000)

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d..._netpolicy.htm
Removes Policy Setting that disables Windows Update - Windows XP
If you receive the following error:
Access Denied
Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and
install updates on your computer.
If you believe you have received this message in error, please check with your
system administrator.

I don't have a problem installing updates from the Windows
Update Site. Just that when I try to install this update,
the Windows update site says it was unable to complete the
installation.

So I wouldn't have to keep downloading the KB835732
Critical Update, I enabled the showing of the Windows
Update Catalog, and then download the complete Critical
Update Patch for KB835732.

Now when I run WindowsXP-KB835732-x86-ENU.exe, it starts
installing. But when it is almost completed installing, I
get a small Dialog box that says "Access Denied". After
clicking "OK", another dialog box appears saying:

KB835732 Installaton Incomplete

Select "OK" to undo the changes that have been made,
or select "Cancel" to quit. If you select "Cancel",
your system will be left in a partially updated state
and may not work correctly.

I then click "OK", and it undoes the changes.

How can I find out what is causing "WindowsXP-KB835732-x86-
ENU.exe" to not finish the installation.

Found the log file and the problem. Needed to look at
%windir%\kb835732.log in notepad. Where it showed that it
was failing to update the Registry settings for HKCR.

Used the "WindowsXP-KB835732-x86-ENU.exe /extract" to
extract the contents of the hotfix to a temporary dirctory.

I then looked at sp2\update\update.inf to locate the
section that the log file had shown was failing. It was
showing that it was trying to update the registry (HKCR
and HKLM).

After comparing the security permissions for HKCR with
another system. I found that several groups were missing
(i.e. Adminitrators Group, System, ..).

Resetting these security permissions, fixed the install
for this Critical Update.
