The XP computer hung up during the shut down. I waited about 10 minutes,
then turned the power off. The first condition is that it will not boot up.
It starts to load Windows, then stops and tries to restart, endlessly.

When I use the xp disc, I get a notice that there is an update already in
progress. Two of the options lead to a screen that freezes on Preparing in
install, one black and white with a strip on the bottom, the second with a
light blue screen and dos characters in the upper left corner.

I use MacAfee antivirus software.

It will open in safe mode. I have tried two Restores, of prior dates. The
computer is presently hung up on shutting down.

Thanks.

Never overlook the possibility of hardware trouble. Before doing anything
(you might regret later) to the software, check for unseated memory modules,
IDE cables, etc.

If you want to see if the hardware is OK without opening the box, get hold
of a copy of Knoppix, Ubuntu or BartPE and do a soak-test, booted from a CD.

Not knowing the exact problem, one fix to it,install xp cd,boot to xp

select 1 For disk C: Press enter key for password, type:CHKDSK C: /R When
its thru (12-20 minutes),try typing:Listsvc See what all is
running,typingisable
Disables a windows service if need be,type:HELP List all cmds Or simply

Your suggestion made me look at my recent history. Problems started a few
months ago, and I had to reload my D-Link IPC drivers three times. I opened
in safe mode, used restore, had Windows open, (although it wouldn't turn
off), I uninstalled the Network card, and put in a new Linksys card. Viola'!
Problem solved. Thanks for heading me in the right direction!
