Trying to re-install Windows Defender

I was having trouble with not being able to install WD definition updates so
I tired to install WD again, and it told me that I already had a version, and
I should remove that first using add/remove programs. I went to add remove
programs but I did not have a "Remove" button. I tried deleting the folder,
and all deleted except for 2 files which will not allow me to delete them
(MpShHook.dll, and MpOAv.dll). I still get the error that I have an existing
version of WD when I try to re-install. I tried renaming the 2 files but the
error persists. Not sure what to try next. Thanks.

What version of Windows? Have you tried restarting your machine, and then
re-trying the file deletions?

I am running XP with SP3, and yes I have rebooted many times with the same
results. Thanks.

Hello moolkay,

So does the same thing happen when you reboot into Safe Mode to then
eradicate the pest?
