I'm new at this, but want to edit a video clip with an imbedded audio track.
I want to fade out the video, but keep the audio playing, but when I trim the
video the audio trims also. I worked around it by separating the clip where
I wanted the audio to stop and moved the audio track to the audio/music
category. That worked, but I was wondering if it is possible to trim the
video track only and leave the imbedded audio track in tact.

One way to do what you are trying is to mute the entire audio track, clip
the video where you want it to fade out, and drag another copy of the video
from your collections directly to the audio portion of the timeline (it will
then recognize it as an audio file). By doing this you have audio that is
not split and should not cause any audio "glitches" when rendering the movie
which I will assume is why you are asking the question.
