Hi Guys/Gals.

I have a Netgear router connected to my main pc and a
wireless card in the 2nd pc in the next room. I have set
it up ok and it seams to be working just fine internet
wise and no dropped connections beteween the 2 computers.
The problem i have is that when i transfer files beteween
the 2 computers it seems to take forever. For instance a
290mb file takes 15-20 minutes to transfer. Is this
normal?, and if not could you maybe give me some advice
on what steps i can take to speed up the transfer process.

Depending on the compatibility of the hardware, particularly
the wireless card, speed of transfer is rarely as fast as
the maximum advertised.

Depends on the connection...

An 802.11b net has a max bandwidth of 11 Mbps (Megabits/sec), or about 1.3 MBps
(MegaBytes/sec). For a 290 MB file, that means about 3.5 minutes minimum.

However, you will never achieve full bandwidth. Depending on the distance
between the router and the clients, your throughput of about 1/4 max could be
reasonable.

You probably have some sort of network status window, that you can
open, that came with your wireless card. Check out the information
provided. You should see things like, transfer rate, what protocol (a,
b, g), any limits set, etc. Sometimes the transfer rate can be set to
some low value, or maybe on automatic, it is getting set low because
of some interference from a cell phone, etc.
