Tiny Scanner but no image scanning software

My gran bought a Tiny PC about 4 years ago, came with windows 98 and scanner
+ all the other crap they bundle.

I have just installed XP for her on the machine, but since doing this I have
realised that Windows XP does not come with imaging built in. The
installation CD for the scanner does not include picture scanning software,
it only has the driver and a OCR program.

I am looking for your help with this, preferably I would like a freeware
program that will do a simple scan (and/or crop) and save to JPG format.

It's got to be very easy to use as it's for my gran and she's a bit behind
when it comes to these sorts of things. I have paint shop pro which I could
install for her but I beleive this would be too complecate for her because
you have to scan, then file >save as > file type > file name, etc... it's
just too long winded for a 87 year old!

Have you got any reccomendations please
Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks

Hard to beat IrfanView.
irfanview.com

There may be something simpler for free, but iview does an amazing lot of
functions for free.

What is the brand of the scanner?
Perhaps they have a program for this scanner on their web site.

Does Windows Xp recognize your scanner?
Windows XP has a new system for scanners and digital cameras
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/...A/default.mspx
and
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/scanner_camera_add.mspx>
Microsoft Windows XP - Scanners and cameras overview

Almost every graphics program have a way to communicate to the scanner
but operate the same way as PSP.

Some sugestions of Graphics applications:

Sorry to inform you but Windows XP *does* come with Imaging software built
into Windows Explorer already (right click on file pane and select
thumbnails or slide show (there are even a few XP Powertoys that add more
features to this function such as image re-sizing and image converting)
thereby pretty much making irfanview nearly obsolete (don't get me wrong, I
loved that program on my old 98 machine but XP has pretty much made it
useless to me, at least)

Windows XP comes with the WIA imaging applet. Usually, all you need to do is
press the scan button, or scan from any app such as PhotoFiltre. Simply
press "File,, Import TWAIN,, Select Source,, then select WIA or TWAIN and
Scan. See which works best. You will probably like your TWAIN driver better
than WIA, but it works.

Hi JP,

I can't offer you much help. These scanner utilities have been mentioned
in ACF:

Simple Copier (XP?)
http://www.neogie.com/simplecopier/

iCarbon (XP - ok)
http://www.idev.ch/index.php?option=...electcat&cat=2

Quick Copy 2 Printer (XP - no)
http://www.boss-it.nl/

SOS might have something on his site:

I'm talking about the Imaging software that actually scans in photographs
from a scanner, not a program to view photos already on the hard drive
