I have a Dell Windows Vista Home Premium Inspiron 530. Up until a week or two
ago I could view my photos both as thumbnails and in preview. Now I only get
the generic thumbnail icon, although I can get the pictures in preview. How
can I get the pictures back in thumbnail?
Incidentally, if I send a photo to the recycle bin it also only shows with
the generic thumbnail icon

Try deleting your Thumbnail Cache through Disk Cleanup > Click Start > All
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
